Four great audio books
That way you can actually read while doing other stuff; which, of course, is fantastic. Just the last couple of weeks, I've listened to these books and my life is now several units better. These audiobooks are available for you to rent through Libby:
Markus Zusak – The Book Thief (2006)
A beautiful, funny, heartbreaking story set before and during WW2. The main character, Liesel Meminger, is an 11 year old girl who is living with her foster parents in a town outside Munich. To handle the horribleness of war, she has a hobby; stealing books.
Narrated in a fantastic manner by British actor Allan Corduner.
David Duchovny – Bucky F*cking Dent (2016)
After finishing his education at a prestigious Ivy League university Ted feels he has let everybody down. In his 30s, he is working selling peanuts at Yankee stadium and writes unpublished novels in his crummy apartment. When he learns - by mistake - that his father is dying from cancer, he decides to move back home. It's going to be weird. His mother is dead and he hasn't talked to his father for five years.
These are heavy subjects, but David Duchovny (yes THAT David Duchovny) has a light touch and a great sense of humour. This is his second book; I thought the first one was OK, but this one is great.
The book is charmingly narrated by the author in a laid back way.
Gustave Flaubert – Madame Bovary (1856)
One of the great novels in literature history. Says me. Surprisingly modern feeling and and a great way of inhaling some timeless culture. Madame Bovary is an unhappy woman. She tries to alleviate that by reading, but it doesn't really help. So she tries a man instead. That doesn't help either. The enjoyment for me was in the wonderful way Flaubert uses the language and this is a great translation too, so get at it.
Jim Gaffigan – Food (2014)
Probably one of the stupidest books we have at the library. Stand up comedian Jim Gaffigan narrates his own book and makes it even funnier. He talks about food in different areas of the US, and isn't above using local accents and stereotypes to make his point. Laugh out loud funny.
