Hank Williams - The Hillbilly Shakespeare

17. september 1923 ble Hiram King Williams født nær en grusvei og et jorde i Mount Olive, Butler County, Alabama.

Hank pustet ut for siste gang 1. januar 1953 i baksetet på en lyseblå Cadillac cabriolet. Dødsårsaken var hjertesvikt forårsaket av en kombinasjon av alkohol, morfin og sovemedisin.

Hank Williams er den ubestridte kongen av moderne countrymusikk, og derav kallenavnet The Hillbilly Shakespeare.

Det hele startet da han fylte åtte år og fikk en gitar av sin mor. Han lærte litt på egen hånd, men det var den lokale bluessangeren Rufus «Tee Tot» Payne som skulle bli hans mentor. I 1937, da Hank var 14 år, flyttet han til den nærmeste byen og startet bandet The Drifting Cowboys.

Noen år seinere, etter mye spilling ved omreisende medisinshow, kneiper og på lokale fester, fikk de i 1941 en fast programpost på den lokale radiostasjonen WSFA.

Sterling Records spilte inn to sanger med Hank Williams: "Honky Tonkin" og "Never Again", som igjen førte til en kontrakt med MGM Records. I 1947 publiserte de låten «Move it on Over», som ble en umiddelbar hit.

Året etter, i 1948, ble han en del av Louisiana Hayride, et populært live radioshow som hadde sendinger fra Shreveport, Louisiana. Dette året kom også "Honky Tonkin" og "I'm a Long Gone Daddy", som gikk rett inn på listene blant de mest populære låtene dette året.

I 1949 spilte han inn "Lovesick Blues", tidligere spilt inn av Emmett Miller.

Hank debuterer på country-scenen Grand Ole Opry, og var nå en megasuksess og en stor stjerne.

Dette året kommer også etter min mening verdens vakreste og tristeste sang:

Han blir far til sønnen Randall Hank som også blir en betydelig countrystjerne under navnet Hank Willams Jr., som igjen får sønnen Shelton Hank Williams, som også skal slå inn på samme vei som bestefaren, bare i en mer rocka utgave. Han kaller seg Hank Williams III.

Hank Williams er ikke bare countrymusikkens mest innflytelsesrike artist, men hadde også stor påvirkning på tidlig rockabilly og rock 'n' roll. Hør bare på «Honky Tonkin», «Move it on Over» og «Honky Tonk Blues».

«I Saw the Light» var et friskt pust i den hvite gospeltradisjonen.

Hank var nå 25 år og countrymusikkens stjerne. Alle ville ha en bit av Hank, og det var vanskelig å si nei til betalte spillejobber selv om ryggproblemene og alkoholismen bare ble verre og verre.

Legger man til samlivsbrudd, har man cocktailen til den perfekte countrylåten, og hitlåtene kom nå som perler på en snor: "Lovesick Blues", "Long Gone Lonesome Blues", "Why Don't You Love Me", "Moanin' the Blues", "Cold, Cold Heart", "Hey, Good Lookin'", "Jambalaya (On the Bayou)", "I'll Never Get Out of This World Alive", "Kaw-Liga", "Your Cheatin' Heart", og "Take These Chains from My Heart" som egentlig bare var toppen av isfjellet.

Hank Williams ble erklært død klokken 07.00 den 1. januar 1953. Han ble 29 år. Dødsårsaken var et hjerteinfarkt etter overdose med alkohol og narkotika. Tre dager senere, søndag 4. januar, ble Hank gravlagt i Montgomery, Alabama med mer enn 25.000 sørgende som kom for å vise sin respekt.

"I'll Never Get Out of This World Alive"

20 år seinere (1973) dør også en ung mann, Ingram Cecil Connor III, bedre kjent som Gram Parsons. Gram var stor fan av Hank Williams og blandet country med rock på samme måte som Hank blandet sin country med blues. Gram Parsons kalte det cosmic american music. Tourmanageren Phil Kaufman, som hadde inngått en pakt med Gram Parsons, stjal liket og brente det i ørkenen på Grams favoritt sted, Joshua Tree.

Dette er nå 50 år siden og en annen historie.

Hiram "Hank" Williams

Hank Williams var en amerikansk sanger, gitarist og komponist som regnes som en av de største stilskaperne i countrymusikken.

Han ble tidlig inspirert av hillbillymusikk, blues og gospel, opptrådte flittig allerede som tenåring i Montgomery, Alabama, og gjorde sine første plateinnspillinger i 1942.

Fra 1946 var Williams bosatt i Nashville, hvor han fikk platekontrakt og snart slagere med Move It On Over, Honky Tonkin' og I'm A Long Gone Daddy. I 1949 ble Lovesick Blues (en coverversjon) årets mest solgte countryplate. Fra 1950 spilte Hank Williams inn en rekke religiøse sanger under navnet Luke The Drifter.

En lang rekke av sangene hans er blitt klassikere, blant andre Hey Good Lookin', den gospelinspirerte I Saw The Light, Honky Tonk Blues, Your Cheatin' Heart, Jambalaya og Cold, Cold Heart. Williams levde et hardt liv med alkoholmisbruk og stadige turneer, og etter sin død ble han noe av en legende. Livet hans er skildret blant annet i filmen Your Cheatin' Heart (1964).

Williams' sønn, Hank Williams Jr. (født 1949), har også gjort suksess som countrysanger i en sterkt rockepåvirket stil. Og hans sønnesønn Hank Williams III (født 1972) har siden 1999 gjort seg bemerket med sin hardtslående country med kontroversielle tekster.
